Beware of Phony Emails: A Guide to Spotting Scams with a Single Glance at the Sender’s Address

  • Jack Jorgensen, CEO Jack Jorgensen, CEO

Email scams can be a real bummer, but the good news is that they’re often easy to spot if you know what to look for! In this lighthearted blog post, we’ll be discussing one of the simplest and most effective ways to identify a potential email scam: checking the email address it was sent from.

Here’s an example of a recent email I’ve been sent:

3 Years of Geek Squad PC Care! Oh my! How useful for my Mac.

When you receive ANY email and you don’t know where it came from – and the spam filters didn’t work – check the email address it was sent from.

I am 100% certain Geek Squad is not sending invoices using a fake gmail account.

We’ve all gotten those mysterious emails promising us a million dollars, a brand-new car, or a lifelong supply of chocolate (yes, please!). But before you start daydreaming about your newfound wealth, take a closer look at the email address the message came from. If it’s not from an official company or organization, chances are it’s a scam.

For example, if you get an email claiming to be from your bank but the email address ends with “somethingfishy.com” instead of “yourbank.com,” it’s probably not the real deal. The same goes for emails claiming to be from the government, a well-known company, or a charity. If the email address doesn’t match the official one you know and trust, it’s best to hit the “delete” button and move on.

So, what should you do if you receive an email from an unfamiliar address that you’re not sure about? Here are a few tips:

  • Don’t respond to the email or click on any links.
  • Don’t provide any personal information or send money.
  • Do a quick internet search to see if others have reported similar emails as scams.
  • Check the official website of the company or organization the email claims to be from to verify if the offer is legitimate.

Remember, scammers are constantly coming up with new and creative ways to trick people, so it’s always a good idea to be cautious and double-check before responding to any emails that seem too good to be true. But by keeping a lookout for the email address the message was sent from, you’ll be well on your way to avoiding email scams and having a scam-free inbox!
